Progressive overload means gradually increasing the demand on your body — more reps, weight, time or difficulty — so it keeps adapting. It's the core principle behind getting stronger and fitter, applied patiently.
- Gradually increase the demand over time.
- Add reps, weight, time or difficulty.
- Small steady increases beat big jumps.
- Progress stalls without it.
The principle
Your body adapts to the demand you place on it. Keep the demand constant and progress stops; increase it gradually and you keep improving. That's the whole idea.
Applying it
Add a rep, a little weight, or a longer effort every week or two in your training. Small increments are sustainable; big jumps risk injury.
Recovery is part of it
Overload needs recovery to work. If performance stalls or you feel run-down, back off before pushing on. Progress is the overload-plus-recovery cycle, not endless grinding.
