Set goals that are modest, time-bound and built on habits you can keep — a gradual rate of loss (often around 0.5–1 lb a week) and process goals like daily steps or vegetables, rather than only a target number.
- Aim for gradual, sustainable change, not speed.
- Pair an outcome goal with habit (process) goals.
- Modest goals are easier to keep and compound.
- Non-scale wins count: energy, fit, strength.
Gradual beats dramatic
Health authorities generally describe gradual loss as more sustainable than rapid drops. The CDC frames slow and steady as the goal, because fast loss is usually water and lean mass and rarely lasts.
Process goals do the work
A number on the scale is an outcome you don't directly control day to day. Habit goals — a daily walk, protein at each meal, enough sleep — are things you can control, and they produce the outcome.
Track more than weight
Energy, how clothes fit, strength and mood all signal progress and keep you motivated when the scale stalls (which it will). For why the scale jumps around, see why the scale fluctuates.
